It begins in the fall and ends in the spring, but the tradition-rich Gulfstream Park Championship meeting is still considered the winter meet by longtime horseplayers, who eagerly anticipate another star-studded season of racing in south Florida, beginning Saturday and continuing through April 1.

Mended extends winning streak in Claiming Crown Glass Slipper
The 4-year-old filly Mended ran her winning streak to 10 when speeding away to another eye-catching romp Saturday in the first of nine Claiming Crown races at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. Other early Claiming Crown races went to First Growth, Blue Bahia, and Twocubanbrothersu. -
The Wizard handicaps the Claiming Crown
The Claiming Crown always offers full fields and very competitive racing, with horses shipping in from many different venues. This usually results in several races with generous payoffs. It’s a handicapping puzzle at its best and one I look forward tackling each year.

Outside post ups the challenge for Mal Guapo in Claiming Crown Iron Horse
The Iron Horse is the epitome of Claiming Crown ideals. Restricted to horses who have competed under a claiming tag of $8,000 or less at any point in their careers, the Iron Horse invariably showcases those who have improved in remarkable fashion in far surpassing those modest expectations.

Special Ops tops Maker exacta in Claiming Crown Emerald
Mike Maker, who has won more Claiming Crown races than any other trainer in the history of the event, added to his record total and did so with a flourish in Saturday’s $125,000 Claiming Crown Emerald at Gulfstream Park. -
Plenty of back class in Claiming Crown Emerald, Tiara
Stakes races dot the past performances of the horses in the Claiming Crown Emerald and its twin sister, the Claiming Crown Tiara. That fact runs counter to the “blue collar” theme popularly assigned to the series, but there's no apparent rush to sue for false advertising.
