Bolt d'Oro leads cast of local early Derby prospects
Bolt d'Oro has been taking it fairly easy since the Breeders' Cup, but soon he and the rest of the 3-year-old class of 2018 at Santa Anita will begin their serious preparations toward the May 5 Kentucky Derby, which locally based horses have won four times in the last six years, with California Chrome, Nyquist, I'll Have Another, and, of course, Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.

Front-running Giant Expectations upsets San Antonio
Gary Stevens, aboard Giant Expectations in the Grade 2, $300,000 San Antonio Stakes for older horses, took advantage of unexpectedly being left alone on the lead, and parlayed that into a front-running, upset victory in the first of four stakes run on opening day at Santa Anita. -
Hovdey: Cassidy turning the page with Prime Attraction
The four graded stakes being presented on Tuesday's opening-day card at Santa Anita all look toward goals of 2018, rather than embellishments of sad old '17. The Mathis Brothers Mile on grass pushes a reset button for the division, which leads to the Kilroe Mile and beyond. The Malibu, once the centerpiece of opening day, is being pillaged once again this year by invaders, while the La Brea, also at seven furlongs, dares anyone to show up who thinks they can handle the local fillies Unique Bella, Paradise Woods, and Miss Sunset. The whole bunch is about to turn 4, and a world where Gun Runner, World Approval, and Forever Unbridled lurk.
